Gaming Independence: Freeing Others Through the Art of Thumbsticking

Sadly, there is no American Revolutionary War video game tearing up the charts right now. Nor, has there ever been. Probably because the sheer amount of time it takes to reload a musket would bore most gamers, and they would continually ask "Why are they marching in straight lines towards their doom?!" So, we may never know what it was like to be a soldier fighting for independence from England. From a video game perspective, that is. If you want to know what it was like from a real standpoint, you're going to need to read a book.

But thankfully the concept of freedom isn't unique to America, and it has been liberally applied to the world of video games. How many titles have you played where you represent a lone holdout, the one man, the final line of defense, the tip of the spear of freedom? Many, my friends, many. That's because you can control your own destiny with just your thumbs and index fingers, and a few mouse clicks or stick twiddles. As we reflect on our own independence today, and when you're not rocking out, check out this list of video games that let freedom ring.
