The FFmpeg software is a free tool used to record, convert and make stream audio and video files in various formats.
Developers are creating a native VP8 video codec for the open source FFmpeg project to demonstrate the feasibility of producing an independent VP8 implementation. It is meant to offer an open source alternative to the H.264
video codec, which is controlled by the MPEG LA licensing body . FFmpeg’s 0.6 release could help make the codec even more widely supported by adding it to projects like XBMC, which is the basis for Boxee’s software.
