Major Nelson's Weekly Recap - Jun 14 2010
Another week, another recap... and you love me for it: 3 days of gaming made me pretty happy for some reason. A big holler to Major Nelson for honoring me with what little time I know is available. I was sort of hoping for a gamerscore bump, but that didn't materialize.

Your Guide to the World of Avatar: The Last Airbender
First of all, we're restoring Avatar to the title of this property. Mostly because that's the name everyone knows it by, and also because James Cameron doesn't have a copyright on that word. That's ridiculous. Right? Wait ... Xbox Live virtual representations of your self are now called XboxCuties? Curses, he got to Microsoft too. I guess everyone has their breaking point. Speaking of breaking points, it looks like The Last Airbender might be the breaking point for film critics. It's been getting some scathing reviews.
But you know what? This film, just like the animated television series that it's based on, was made for children, and children are going to love this thing. It's got action, martial arts, fire, magic and a floating buffalo thingy in it, and that's just about all they need to enjoy something. Yes, the acting is fairly terrible. Yes, they white-washed the film with their casting. Yes, Dev Patel's one emotion in this film is smoulder. But if I had seen this when I was seven years old, I would have loved it.
Because many of you are either excited about seeing this, or have kids who are dragging you to the theater kicking and screaming, here's a little Avatar: The Last Airbender primer for you. Just so you won't get lost, like the two people sitting next to me earlier this week who kept whispering "I don't get it" to each other.

Rock Your Freedom: Songs For A Patriotic Weekend
America. This is the weekend you celebrate your independence, and your escape from under the tyrannical oppression of Great Britain. "Taxation without representation" became the rallying cry that stoked the fires of eventual revolution, and on July 4, 1776, you declared yourself independent. Awesome. What's the best way to celebrate that event? Why, with rock and roll, of course.
It's hard to think of few things more quintessentially American than fireworks, hamburgers on the grill, the smell of suntan lotion, and sweet, unfiltered, pure rock and roll. That's why you need to Rock Your 4th with these songs. We're not showing favorites here between Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and the only thing we really wish was that "America, Eff Yeah" from the Team America soundtrack was available in either of these games.
Have a rockin' holiday, and go activate that Star Power already!

Please keep it coming." Case in point? Our list of favorite fourths. Of course, these are just ours. So be sure to let us know what your favorite fours are. Gaming Independence: Freeing Others Through the Art of Thumbsticking
Sadly, there is no American Revolutionary War video game tearing up the charts right now. Nor, has there ever been. Probably because the sheer amount of time it takes to reload a musket would bore most gamers, and they would continually ask "Why are they marching in straight lines towards their doom?!" So, we may never know what it was like to be a soldier fighting for independence from England. From a video game perspective, that is. If you want to know what it was like from a real standpoint, you're going to need to read a book.
But thankfully the concept of freedom isn't unique to America, and it has been liberally applied to the world of video games. How many titles have you played where you represent a lone holdout, the one man, the final line of defense, the tip of the spear of freedom? Many, my friends, many. That's because you can control your own destiny with just your thumbs and index fingers, and a few mouse clicks or stick twiddles. As we reflect on our own independence today, and when you're not rocking out, check out this list of video games that let freedom ring.

Tech Review: JVC Everio GZ-HM550 Camcorder
JVC takes small and powerful camcorders one step further with the HM 550, which features a high quality Konica Minolta lens, takes 9 megapixel stills and can be remote controlled via Bluetooth. Chris Hardwick and Kevin Pereira find out if this gadget is worth $600.
Find the full review from Gadget Pron on Attack of the Show after the cut.
What You Need To Know
This is one of the smallest camcorders we've reviewed. It's barely over 2" thick and about as long as a normal person's hand. It only weighs about 2/3 of a pound. It's all around easy to carry and shoot with, but JVC still hasn't switched over to a touch screen. They use a touch sensitive strip and buttons to navigate. It works like it should, but we can't help think that it might be time to go to a touch screen for more screen real estate. In addition to being able to control the camcorder via Bluetooth, it has advanced image stabilization, takes 9 megapixel stills and other features, all of which work well. The Bluetooth App is pretty self explanatory: you can record movies, zoom in and out, take pictures and even capture images from the camcorder onto your cell phone. The main problem is that the App is only for certain BlackBerry and Windows Mobile phones, not for the iPhone or Android. Taking pictures is great, because you don't have to switch modes. Just press the snapshot button at any time while filming and it takes pictures without skipping a beat. The image stabilization is okay, but occasionally you'll get trailing around your subjects if you move a lot. The camcorder records at 1920 x 1080, meaning full HD which looks good. Normal light footage looks really crisp: the colors are vibrant and accurate, and the only thing that takes away from it is a little bit of camera shake. Low light footage is mediocre: there's too much noise and trailing. The automatic light on the camera does help this problem. Other features include 43 GB of storage, an SDHC slot, sleek design and good image quality.Price

Details On The Upcoming Lost Epilogue Short
Here's to hoping that the chapter will indeed be included with Season 6. It would be the ultimate middle finger to fans who have already purchased the existing seasons, regardless of format, to essentially dangle this Easter Egg as an incentive to re-buy them. It seems excessively evil, which leads me to believe that the fears will prove unfounded and that we probably will get "The New Man in Charge" with Season 6.

Nugget From The Net: Batman: City Of Scars
When I first saw that this was another Batman fan film, my immediate question was "why?" Considering that we're currently in the middle of the run of a great series of official Batman films, this seemingly contradicts the mission of fan films of bringing to life what we don't have yet. That feeling, however, didn't last long once I started to watch it. While there are moments where the dialogue tries too hard to be poignant and some of the acting performances leave a bit to be desired, the film overall is a psychological masterpiece. The look of the film is absolutely stunning and at the end, it is an insightful look into Batman's soul.
It should also be noted that the Schoenkes' Batman work predates the Nolan films, a testament to the fact that this is their own vision of seedy Gotham, not his. These guys definitely deserve props. Uh.This student-esque flick is nowhere near as cool as Nolan's work. Kudos for producing it on the cheap. Dodos for allowing it to look like it was done on the cheap. I gave up after the first 5 minutes.

Aliens vs Predator PC Review
Rebellion made FPS history in the early 90s when they created Alien vs. Predator for the Atari Jaguar console. While the crossover of these two science fiction franchises had already become commonplace in many mediums, the idea of a game with an amalgamation of different races, each with their own distinct play style, was nearly unheard of. Even today, such a thing scarcely exists outside of the real-time strategy genre, where StarCraft made its mark in much the same way.
The developer rehashed and refined its unique concept for the PC and Mac with 1999

Intel Core i7-980X Performance Preview: 6-Core Processing Arrives
The state of multi-threaded games
It's been over three years since Intel ushered in the quad-core era of computing with their introduction of the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 in November 2006. Back then we couldn't find a single game capable of taking advantage of the CPU's four processing cores; at best games of that era were only dual-threaded, leaving half of the QX6700's cores idling away unused. Unless you were into 3D rendering, or a mega-tasker running multiple apps in the background while gaming, the CPU just wasn't a feasible option for most users, especially given its $999 price tag.
Today however the software landscape has changed drastically.
Capcom's MT Framework engine is easily our favorite example of a game application that's been coded to run multiple threads simultaneously. The MT Framework engine was first used in Lost Planet, and now can be found in games like Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil. Now Capcom is putting the finishing touches on MT Framework 2.0, which will be showcased in Lost Planet 2 later this year. All of these games scale well with CPUs that contain multiple cores.
Many RTS games are also multi-threaded. Relic's Essence 2.0 engine used in Dawn of War II is one example, and Gas Powered Games Supreme Commander is another. World In Conflict is another popular RTS from a few years back that's designed for multiple cores.
And just last week Terminal Reality announced that their Infernal Engine has been updated to support the Core i7-980X. The Infernal engine was used in Ghostbusters last year.

The subway system beneath Moscow was one of the largest and busiest in the world, but now it is the only refuge for the scant survivors in the region. Mutated creatures prowl the irradiated surface, but it is not entirely uncommon for them to venture into the bowels of the city. A new breed of sentient beings called Homo Novus or, more commonly, Dark Ones, have been stirring the monsters into a frenzy. 3D Universal Prescription Glasses
Categories: High Definition (Blu-ray, HD DVD, HDTV), Other
Gunnar Optiks has come up with a solution to one of the biggest problems that people with bad vision face; having to wear two different pair of glasses while watching a 3D movie.
Gunnar has come out with a pair of "universal 3D glasses". These glasses are compatible with any projection screen or TV that uses RealD 3D technology.
Unfortunately, most 3D movies being released (such as Avatar or Toy Story 3) require "active shutter" 3D glasses so these new glasses from Gunnar wouldn't be much help.
They are also working on a version of these 3D glasses that will be available for those with eye wear prescriptions meaning if you go into a movie theater, you won't have to do anything.

Goverment Cracks Down on Movie Piracy

In an ongoing fight against intellectual piracy, federal authorities seized the domain names of nine websites accused of letting users watch on-demand versions of first-run movies, sometimes just hours after its theatrical release.
These nine sites were among the most popular for distributing illegal copies of new movies, such as "Toy Story 3" and "The A-Team".
The nine sites had registered their domain names via U.S.-based registration services, allowing authorities to take control of their site addresses. Some of the computers were based in various states if the U.S. as well as other countries.

Nintendo 3DS Not Coming Soon Enough
Categories: Gaming
The Nintendo 3DS, the first 3D gaming handheld console, was revealed at E3 this year but Nintendo still hasn't come with a release date or even a price.
The reason we haven’t announced a launch date or pricing is that, first, we wanted to get reaction here. Secondly, we’ll be making individual market decisions in terms of what’s happening in Japan, what’s happening in the Americas, what’s happening in Europe.
Nintendo says the model shown at E3 was not the "final" model, it still need to be tweaked some before they officially release the final product. While Nintendo didn't give a exact date, they did say it will be before April of 2011.
